A week ago, I was sitting in my room procrastinating all the work I have to do by watching Netflix. An ordinary Wednesday afternoon. When I checked the blog email, I found an email from Larry Wilson, the co-writer of Beetlejuice, The Addams Family, and The Little Vampire, about a new web series he is co-producing. He had seen Kelly’s post about The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy, and contacted us asking if we would write a piece about this new series:
“CINDY is a 21st century Cinderella. Taking cues from reality TV but retelling the Cinderella story in a fresh cinematic fashion, it is the kind of genre-bender that Director and Co-Writer Larry Wilson is noted for. The humor is often dark. A Fairy Godmother with a drug problem? A Handsome Prince who is old enough to be Cindy’s father?! The drama is deeply felt and rooted in the real world. The fantasy has that surreal Beetlejuice edge. These elements blend together in the ongoing story of a 16-year-old girl struggling to escape a world of ‘happily never after.’ “
As a big fan of Beetlejuice and twisted retellings of classic fairytales, I was super intrigued by this series. I’m a big fan of dark humor, so after watching the trailer, I’m on board.
From the trailer it looks stylistically very similar to Wilson’s other works, as well as thematically. I’m interested in the idea of putting Cinderella in the context of a reality show. The characters all seem like they will be interesting and twisted.
Overall, I’m very excited to see what this show has to offer.
Cindy has yet to premier, and is currently in the process of being funded on Kickstarter (link).
The rewards for backing the Kickstarter are really fantastic. They include things like signed movie posters for Beetlejuice, The Addams Family, Edward Scissorhands, or The Nightmare Before Christmas (one of my top 10 favorite movies) or a screenwriting consultation with Larry Wilson.
If you’re a fan of Beetlejuice and/or The Addams Family or fairytales being updated for modern times, be sure to donate to the Kickstarter.
Follow Cindy on Social Media for updates on the series
Look out for it!
